08. Saunders's gull
A Small but Precious Winter Visitor

Usually, the Saunders’s Gull has a white head like other gulls, but in the summer breeding season, its head turns black.
It is small in size and light in body weight.

They usually move in small flocks of 5–20 individuals and sometimes mix with other gull species.
However, their distinct black spot on the leading edge of the wing makes them easy to recognize even in flight.

They mainly feed on small fish in mudflats and shallow seas.
As predators of mudflat organisms, they help control populations,
and the mudflats they visit are considered to be healthy.

At Seoul Grand Park, the Saunders’s Gull has been with us since 2018, and in June 2025, chicks were born!
With only about 20,000 individuals remaining worldwide and being designated as an Endangered Wildlife Class II species in Korea, let’s all wish for the health of the Saunders’s Gull.
