The birth of Seoul Grand Park

Korea's first zoo and botanical garden opened
on November 1, 1909 in Changgyeongwon.
Changgyeongwon was renamed by the Japanese government from “Changgyeonggung”, with its status downgraded from a palace to a park.
The Japanese who took control of the Korean peninsula in 1909 demolished gates such as Munjeongjeon to build a botanical garden and planted thousands of cherry trees to build a Japanese garden.
In 1931, imperial Japan broke the connection between Jongmyo Shrine and Changgyeonggung Palace to destroy the national spirit,
and even after liberation, Changgyeonggung could not be restored.
Since then, Changgyeonggung was designated as Historic Site No.123 in 1963.
At that time, there was no family park in Seoul,
so Changgyeongwon became popular as a place for flower and zoo outings.

By the end of the 1960s,
people were increasingly calling to relocate the zoo and botanical garden and restore Changgyeongwon into Changgyeonggung.
As three million visitors visited the palace every year, the damage to the palace became severe, and space for new animals became insufficient.
After that, on May 1, 1984, Seoul Grand Park was newly opened in a large space in nature, and until now, it is loved by many as a place to go out with families.
