07. American Flamingo
A Bird Dressed in Red

The Cuban Flamingo has been part of Seoul Grand Park Zoo since its opening and is one of the first animals visitors see.
It is especially beloved by children.

At the Flamingo House, located near the entrance of the zoo,
Cuban Flamingos live together with Greater Flamingos
, Lesser Flamingos, and Chilean Flamingos.

Among all flamingos, the Cuban Flamingo has the most vibrant red feathers.
It maintains this red color by consuming small crabs, crayfish, and shrimp, which are rich in carotenoids found in the crustaceans’ shells.
Without enough of these foods, the feathers may fade in color.

While they can live up to 50 years in well-managed environments, habitat destruction and stress from human disturbance pose threats
to their survival.
Please watch over and support the Cuban Flamingo chick, born at Seoul Zoo for the first time in five years, as it grows up healthy and strong.
