06. Emu
A bird that cannot fly, but has powerful legs

The emu is the second-largest bird in the world and can grow up to about 1.9 meters tall.
Although it is tall and heavy, its wings are only about 20 cm long, so it lacks the strength to fly.

However, the emu's legs are very strong and
powerful, allowing it to run at speeds over 50 km/h
— similar to the speed of a slowly moving car.

Although it cannot fly, it can escape danger by running fast.

Emus usually lay 5 to 15 eggs.
The eggs are large, deep green, and have a beautiful, glossy appearance.
Unlike most birds where the female incubates the eggs and raises the chicks, in emus, the male takes full responsibility for incubation and parenting.
The chicks can walk immediately after hatching.

In March 2025, an emu chick was born at Seoul Zoo for the first time in 10 years.

Please cheer for the emu, currently
classified as "Least Concern" on the IUCN
Red List, so that it can adapt well and grow up healthy at Seoul Grand Park.
